Ron DeSantis suspended his Republican presidential campaign on Sunday, ending his 2024 White House bid just before the New Hampshire primary while endorsing his bitter rival Donald Trump. Ambassador Nikki Haley as the last major candidates remaining in the race ahead of Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary. “Option A: Nikki Haley drops out, unites behind President Trump, and commits to defeating Joe Biden," they wrote. “Option B: Nikki Haley prepares to be absolutely DEMOLISHED and EMBARRASSED in her home state of South Carolina," which votes on Feb. 24. Rep. James James Spillane, of Deerfield, said he had initially backed Trump, switched to DeSantis and will now vote for Trump.

At first blush, it seemed to many to be the key to picking former President Donald Trump's lock on the Hawkeye State's Republican base. The alternative vote split roughly in two, leaving Republican Iowa firmly in Trump's hands as the first ballots of the 2024 presidential contest were cast. Trump does not thrive among suburban voters, a group that cost Trump nationally in 2020 and where Haley showed promise Monday. Haley, by contrast, beat Trump in Johnson County, Iowa, a burgeoning tract of homes and businesses along Interstate 80 south of Cedar Rapids. A week earlier, Trump volunteer Jackie Garlock looked around a similar hall in Mason City in northern Iowa on a snowy Saturday, convinced Trump would win.

Ron DeSantis' campaign is announcing the completion of a longtime campaign pledge Saturday: touring all of Iowa's 99 counties, a milestone for a campaign that has devoted significant resources to the first-in-the-nation contest. On paper, DeSantis has made significant strides in running a traditionally successful Iowa campaign, racking up influential endorsements and dedicating significant time, personnel and financial resources to the state. And while the DeSantis campaign, with significant super PAC help, has stayed focused on Iowa, it remains unclear just what the traditional Iowa playbook counts for in this unusual modern campaign against Trump. "Winning an Iowa caucus requires a strong combination of outworking and out-organizing the competition and that's been the Ron DeSantis model. Inside the sprint to the caucusesStill, the DeSantis playbook in Iowa hardly stops at the "Full Grassley."

Ron DeSantis said state Republican Party Chairman Christian Ziegler should resign while police investigate a rape allegation against him. DeSantis is running for president, and the state GOP is working to reelect U.S. Sen. Rick Scott. Florida was also key to Republicans winning a slim majority in the U.S. House in 2022, and the party will be defending the newly won seats. Ziegler took over the party in February, three months after DeSantis was reelected in a landslide in an election where Florida was one of the few bright spots for Republicans nationally. DeSantis appointed Bridget Ziegler to a state-created board to oversee development on Disney World property.

The request for documents and communications was made Thursday by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, now controlled by DeSantis appointees. The district wants all Disney communications about DeSantis, as well as communications dealing with laws passed by the Republican-dominated Florida Legislature that switched control of the district from Disney supporters to the governors’ appointees and nullified deals the company made with the Disney-controlled district before the state takeover. Before control of the district changed hands from Disney allies to DeSantis appointees, the Disney supporters on its board signed agreements with Disney shifting control over design and construction at Disney World to the company. The new DeSantis appointees claimed the “eleventh-hour deals” neutered their powers, and the district sued the company in state court to have the contracts voided. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation Monday that puts sanctions on Iran and protects Jewish institutions. Lawmakers were in Tallahassee earlier this month for a special session, just two months before the Legislature's regular annual session is set to begin. DeSantis also signed measures on Monday to provide hurricane recovery money and expand a program to allow developmentally disabled students attend private school with taxpayer money. The Legislature passed the measures Wednesday just hours before DeSantis participated in a GOP presidential debate in Miami.

The memo, shared with The Associated Press, pointed to Reynolds' surprise endorsement — a rarity for sitting Iowa governors before the caucuses — as proof that DeSantis could cut into Trump's margins. In her own memo, Haley campaign manager Betsy Ankney on Monday described the Iowa contest as a “dead heat” between DeSantis and Haley, while ignoring Trump's massive lead. He has no end game.”The new DeSantis memo points to the political infrastructure that he and an allied super PAC have established across several early voting states. In Iowa, the memo claims “there will soon be 50 dedicated paid staff" and the organizing help of Reynolds, who has her own statewide operation. But learning of Reynolds’ support for DeSantis Sunday did nothing to move her toward him, she said Monday.

Ron DeSantis said Thursday he's arranged to send drones, weapons, and ammunition to Israel as it prepares for an incursion of Gaza in response to Hamas' attack. It's the latest official response DeSantis has taken to back Israel as he competes in the 2024 Republican primary. The state also worked with private groups to supply weapons and ammunition at the request of Israel's consul general in Miami, Redfern said. DeSantis is scheduled to speak Saturday morning to a Nevada Republican group at a casino-resort on the Las Vegas Strip. DeSantis has swiped at former President Donald Trump, the heavy front-runner in the 2024 primary, and former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley over Israel as well.

Ron DeSantis will take time out from debating fellow Republicans in two months to take on a Democrat, California Gov. Fox News said Monday that the two politicians will appear in a 90-minute debate on Nov. 30 in Georgia, at an exact location to be determined. "My kids — they like the Blizzards," DeSantis said, as he ordered one for himself. "They like cones, too, but that gets very messy in the car, so we try to stay away from that." Trump had visited the fast food chain and seemed unfamiliar with the famous ice cream treat, asking "What the hell is a Blizzard?" DeSantis, flanked by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, also used the campaign stop to praise the state's governor, Republican Kim Reynolds, shortly before she signed a six-week abortion ban into law. "She’s done so much, over so many different issues, to make this one of the best-governed states in the country," DeSantis told reporters.

China's policy regarding Taiwan, the world's leader in the semiconductor industry, could end up making it an even bigger focus. The cross-strait strife has already provoked commentary from some top contenders in the Republican presidential primary race who have stressed the need to deter a possible Chinese invasion invasion of the island. But I think ultimately what I think China respects is strength," DeSantis said. 'Like trying to separate conjoined twins'But the political will to defend Taiwan in a Chinese invasion may clash with economic forces. Some CEOs of America's biggest banks have said they would pull their business from China if directed to do so following an invasion of Taiwan.
Ron DeSantis’ administration has blocked a new Advanced Placement course on African American studies from being taught in high schools, saying it violates state law and is historically inaccurate. The state education department rejected the program in a letter last week to the College Board, which oversees AP classes. The College Board website describes the course as interdisciplinary, touching on literature, arts, humanities, political science, geography and science. Sharon Courtney, a high school teacher in Peekskill, New York teaching the African American studies course, said her students were “shocked” to learn Florida blocked the class. She described it as a factual African history course that also details what Africans experienced upon their arrival in North America.
If Trump landed in prison, nothing in the Constitution would block him from another White House run, according to nine legal experts interviewed by Insider. He served eight years in federal prison after being convicted on public-corruption charges. In the Oval Office, Trump conducted business at the ornate Resolute Desk. If he wound up in federal prison, he'd likely have more sway over his fate. Hochul would all but certainly reject calls to cut Trump legal slack in any fashion, pardons included.
Ron DeSantis speaks during the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit in Tampa, Fla. on July 22, 2022. One survey in the nation’s first primary state, New Hampshire, showed the two statistically tied in a primary, but another survey show Trump with a lead. Some Florida polls have also shown DeSantis leading Trump in a one-on-one primary. The poll also showed DeSantis might win a majority of Hispanic voters in Florida, which no Republican governor has done in 20 years. “In that event, Ron has a different set of issues he has to contend with if he wants to run against Trump.”

Ron DeSantis said Tuesday that he would be receptive to a phone call from President Joe Biden about the Hurricane Ian as it closes in on his state. The White House confirmed earlier in the day that Biden hadn't called, but repeatedly dodged questions about why. Biden raised the calls during an event in the White House the Rose Garden but did not mention DeSantis. It's possible he will challenge Biden for president in 2024, particularly if former President Donald Trump doesn't seek the White House again.
